Scottsdale Civic Center

Scottsdale, Arizona

Preserving, transforming, and enhancing a beloved civic space.

  • Improvements to the site will result in an overall reduction of site water use by 5.8 million gallons every year; including renovation and removal of existing water features, reduction of turf, and implementation of low water use plant palettes.

  • The design integrates desired event improvements, including stages and canopies and flexible event opportunities throughout the park.

  • A new children’s garden and community park space adjacent to the Scottsdale Library will have sculptural play features, including a re-sited statue.

Dig Studio along with Ardurra and Lake|Flato collaborated with the City of Scottsdale to transform Civic Center into an event destination as well as vibrant, activated family-friendly green space while working closely to preserve the soul of this beloved park. To guide design decisions, the Dig Studio team developed an approach of preservation, enhancement, and transformation. These themes applied not only to physical attributes of the park, but also environmental and social considerations as well: preserving an active space, the soothing sound of water, and legacy shade trees. Design components carefully balanced the community’s desire for a day-to-day public space that’s welcoming and park-like with new family amenities within a context of creating a magnet for tourism and events.  Modernizing the park to align with Scottsdale’s commitment to water conservation was also a key component of the design, with the design solution slashing the City’s water usage by 5.8 million gallons every year.
